With “Art At Diner,” we wanted to pay tribute to the entire history of art in a single illustration. All the major movements, all the generations, all the masters, brought together in one place, around the counter of an American diner.
The setting is Hopper’s sublime “Nighthawks”, a masterpiece of melancholy. That large bay window isolating its characters from the rest of the world, that palpable silence between people who don’t speak to one another. Hopper painted urban loneliness like no one else. We chose his painting as our playground and our rallying point.
On this ordinary summer night, we’ve summoned some of the greatest paintings of popular culture into a surreal scene. A hooligan hurls a can of tomato soup through the window of a diner, much to the delight of two little dogs reveling in the beverage. This outburst of fury provokes the waiter’s scream, under the disillusioned and melancholic gaze of Venus and a young girl with a pearl , chatting with a man hidden by an apple.
The idea is both simple and ambitious. We have brought together in a single work what art history textbooks divide into separate chapters. The Renaissance and street art. Flemish Classicism and 20th-century American painting. Realism and Surrealism. Impressionism and Pop Art.
This isn’t an art history lesson. It’s a bridge between all generations. A way of saying that the borders between artistic movements are human constructs, but that art itself couldn’t care less about any of that. We love art without distinction of era or legitimacy. We’ve been saying it from the start. This illustration proves it.
